The Mysterious Bookcase

Westbourne’s New Story HavenThe Mysterious Bookcase Westbourne Logo Badman Publishing

Tucked inside the elegant Westbourne Arcade in Bournemouth, The Mysterious Bookcase feels less like a shop and more like a doorway into another world. Floor‑to‑ceiling shelves, cosy corners and the soft hush of turning pages make it the kind of place where you “just pop in” and somehow lose an hour or two.

A Bookshop Born From A Blind Date With A Book

The Mysterious Bookcase didn’t begin as a traditional high-street shop. It started life online, run by Ally and Matt, who began sending out “blind date with a book” parcels back in 2022. Each book was carefully wrapped, its identity hidden behind a few intriguing teaser lines – a mystery genre‑wise as much as story‑wise.

Those surprise parcels struck a chord. Their small Etsy venture grew into a thriving online indie bookshop with a loyal community of readers who loved the excitement of discovering something they might never have picked up themselves. Moving from purely online to a bricks‑and‑mortar space in Westbourne Arcade was the natural next chapter.

On Bookshop Day, 11 October 2025, the doors of The Mysterious Bookcase opened at 6 Westbourne Arcade, inside a beautiful Grade II listed building – a fittingly historic setting for stories of every kind. Now, the shop welcomes both long-time online followers and curious passers-by discovering it for the first time.

Inside The Mysterious Bookcase

Walk through the door, and you’re greeted by walls of books that climb towards the ceiling, punctuated by comfy seating that invites you to pause rather than rush. The layout encourages browsing: narrow pathways between shelves, little seating nooks and the occasional table stacked with new favourites and staff picks. The stock focusses on fiction for adults and young adults, with a particular passion for fantasy and mystery. You’ll find everything from cosy whodunnits and dark thrillers to sprawling epic fantasy, magical realism and imaginative speculative fiction. The idea is curation rather than sheer volume – a range that feels considered, rather than overwhelming.

They’ve carried their “blind date” story with their “blind date with a book” concept – you can still choose a mystery package wrapped in brown paper, labelled only with a few tantalising clues, and take home a surprise read to unwrap with a cup of tea.

The People Behind The Pages

Part of what makes the shop special is the story of the owners themselves. Ally, originally from Canada, and Matt, who grew up in Bournemouth, bring different perspectives but a shared obsession with reading. Between them, they’ve worked in hospitality, social media, finance and executive support – experience that shows in the warm customer service and community feeling of the space. Before opening the physical shop, they spent three years building an online community around books: livestreams, chats with readers and playful interactive packages that turned book buying into an experience rather than a transaction. Stepping into The Mysterious Bookcase, you feel that same energy – conversations at the till about what you’re reading, recommendations tailored to your tastes and the sense that staff genuinely want you to leave with a book you’ll love.

Westbourne Is The Perfect Setting

Westbourne itself is sometimes described as Bournemouth’s “urban village” – an upmarket, independent‑minded pocket between Bournemouth and Poole, with boutique shops, thrift stores and café culture clustered around Poole Road and Seamoor Road. The Victorian‑era Westbourne Arcade, where The Mysterious Bookcase is based, is a covered walkway lined with independent businesses and period architectural details. Westbourne is known for its independent spirit, from fashion and food to specialist retailers.

This setting in Westbourne suits an indie bookshop perfectly. For locals in Bournemouth and Poole, The Mysterious Bookcase offers a reason to shop closer to home rather than defaulting to online giants. For visitors, it’s one of those places that gives a neighbourhood its personality and makes a day trip feel memorable.

More Than Just A Place To Buy Books

Independent bookshops today are as much about community as they are about commerce, and The Mysterious Bookcase has been built with that in mind. The cosy seating areas are designed for conversation as much as solitary reading, making it an easy spot to linger, swap recommendations and feel part of something. They are not new to book selling. Their history as online booksellers means they understand how to blend digital and physical spaces: you might discover them via social media or their website, visit in person, then stay connected through online chats and book packages. For readers who like to feel known – to walk into a shop where someone remembers what they enjoyed last time – this hybrid approach is ideal.
