We've been following the journey of an author who has self-published on Amazon KDP. He has created and published over 100 books including four novels on Amazon, sold over 17,000 copies and earned more than £15,000 in 2023, which appears to be increasing month on month. Along the way he, by his own admission, did a lot of things wrong, but also, learning from mistakes, a few things right. With each new title published, he learned something new, and that's the beauty of self-publishing - you're always learning, evolving and getting better each time. Looking back over his journey he has learned five key things…

First things first - the book cover.

The importance of the attractiveness of your book cover cannot be overstated, especially if you are trying to attract new readers. Your book cover is often the first impression potential buyers will have, especially if you are self-publishing on Amazon, or indeed any platform. Consumers typically judge a book by its cover when searching for new reads. Investing in a quality book cover is crucial for attracting buyers. Ensuring that your book cover is visually appealing can significantly impact your book's success. A well-designed cover can make your book stand out in search results and potentially lead to increased sales compared to books with less appealing covers. Conducting your own research on Amazon can further demonstrate the impact of a good book cover on sales.

Tip number two in self-publishing is the crucial need for editing.

There are generally two ways to approach editing your book: line editing, which involves scouring for mistakes, and developmental editing, which focuses on aspects like plot holes and character development to ensure the book is compelling from a storytelling perspective.
Ideally, both types of editing should be done, but they come with costs. For those on a budget, there are free or affordable ways to edit, although these approaches carry risks. Grammarly is good for line editing to catch errors, and there are also AI tools like ChatGPT available for assistance. By utilizing these tools, you can enhance the quality of your book without investing significant sums. However, it's essential to acknowledge the limitations of AI editing and consider supplementing it with human editing, particularly for developmental aspects. If your budget allows, investing in a professional editor can elevate your book's quality, helping it stand out among competitors and maximizing its potential for success. But a word of warning – evaluate the person charging for editing. We know of one author who paid almost £1,000 for a professional editor. When we saw what was published, we were dismayed at just how many corrections and improvements had to be made once they got the finished script returned.

Tip number three emphasizes the significance of marketing.

There are both free and paid advertising options available. At the very least, make use of social media and email to encourage book purchases, particularly during the launch phase. Amazon provides a slight initial boost when a book is launched. Subsequently, Amazon prioritizes books that demonstrate sales potential by gradually increasing their visibility on the platform. To maximize sales, focus on promoting your book through platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and email swaps with authors in similar genres.
While organic marketing methods are valuable, leveraging Amazon ads is crucial due to the fierce competition. Allocate a budget for advertising within the first month of your book launch to establish early sales momentum and prove to Amazon that your book is marketable.

Number four is being serial.

The importance of creating a series lies in the difficulty of achieving a good return on investment through advertising on platforms like Amazon. When promoting a standalone book, the cost of advertising often outweighs the royalties earned per sale. In contrast, a series offers the advantage of attracting readers to subsequent books within the same series, increasing overall income and offsetting advertising costs. By enticing readers to purchase multiple books in the series, authors can maximize their earnings and make their advertising campaigns more profitable.
A book series creates dedicated readers who eagerly anticipate each instalment – think Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan universe, and Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series. With a series, you only need to develop characters and settings once. Subsequent books build upon this foundation, saving you time and effort. Each book still requires its own plot, but the core elements remain consistent. Even non-super fan readers appreciate returning to familiar characters and places. Series allow readers to immerse themselves in a world they’ve grown to love, making them more likely to continue reading your books.

The fifth and final tip is about using email.

The significance of owning an email list is crucial for authors. With an email list, you can directly communicate with your audience without relying solely on Amazon or social media. For instance, if a hundred people purchase your first book, a portion of them may subscribe to your newsletter because they enjoy your writing and want to stay updated on your future work. By having an email list, you can easily reach out to these subscribers for free, increasing the likelihood of them making future purchases.
Without an email list, you would have to resort to using social media or advertising to connect with your audience each time you release a new book, essentially starting from scratch. Building a community through avenues like an email list or a Facebook group allows you to establish a direct relationship with potential customers, granting you control instead of relying solely on platforms like Amazon.

To conclude…
