The incredible shrinking novel - Apparently we’re all reading shorter books. The Times reports that of the 13 titles longlisted for the International Booker Prize, eight are under 200 pages long. "Forget doorstoppers: short books are winning prizes and readers".
The world of storytelling seems to be having a love affair with shorter fiction at te moment. Novellas and concise novels seem to be stealing the spotlight, with even big-name authors like Alan Hollinghurst and Marlon James wishing they could master the art of brevity. It's a shift that’s hard to miss—bookshops now showcase slim volumes under 250 pages, from translated works to cutting-edge experimental fiction.
This trend makes a lot of sense. In a time when everyone juggles busy schedules, shorter books offer a way to dive into a story and feel enriched without needing weeks to finish. Independent publishers and booksellers have been major champions of this transition, taking risks on shorter, punchier narratives that pack an emotional punch. Translated fiction has played a big part also, as shorter books are more affordable to produce and easier for new authors to break into the market.
What we find exciting is how these compact books can deliver the same depth and richness as sprawling novels. It’s proof that sometimes, less really can be more. Readers seem to agree - it’s not about the number of pages, but the space a story takes up in your mind. Short fiction is having a moment, and hopefully, it’s one that is here to stay.
